Francis Wray has over 30 years experience in scientific consultancy and computing. During this period he has had a significant involvement in the industrial deployment of leading-edge computer technology, parallel processing in particular.
Originally a mathematical physicist, he became active in signal processing and high-performance and parallel computing.
In 1979, he joined Topexpress Ltd, a scientific and computer consultancy and was later appointed to the Board of the company. There he established a group pioneering the application of parallel processing to industrial applications for clients including BAe, Rolls Royce and the MoD and led the development of a library of parallel numerical algorithms running on Transputer systems. He represented the company in the establishment of the UK's National Robotics Research Centre, a £10 million joint collaboration of Government, Academe and manufacturing industry, and became a member of its Board of Directors in 1988.
From 1989 to 1993 he was a senior manager at Parsytec Computer, which manufactured massively parallel computer systems, where he was responsible for product development and international projects. In this role, in 1991, he was a founder member of the Open Microprocessor Initiative Advisory Board which advised the European Commission on the formulation and implementation of industrial strategies for the European microprocessor industry.
Since 1993 he has been an independent consultant in advanced computing with clients including The Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre, The European Commission, The DTI, The Scottish Office, Hitachi Europe, Platform Computing, Intel and The European Bioinformatics Institute.
Francis Wray has an MA in Theoretical Physics and a PhD in Geophysics, both from the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Cambridge Philosophical Society.
