Tel first programmed a computer in 1963 and rapidly became hooked. After graduating with a degree in Mathematics he went on to get a Masters degree in Computer Science in 1972 and has worked as a programmer ever since.
Over a long career he has worked for a number of companies handling a variety applications. He worked with Digico when it was the second largest computer manufacturer in the UK and was part of the team that maintained the operating system. His time with Instrumental Colour Systems stretched his mathematical abilities as he worked with some of the leading colour experts to measure and predict colours. Subsequently, he worked for the Dowty group in a number of roles - for instance in graphics helping develop systems used on naval submarines and in another section designing modems - and often worked slightly on the edge. So he find himself asked to develop an operating system or work with an engineering team to squeeze some nano-seconds out of a chipset it was building. Once he was asked to create a compiler.
Since 1996 he has been working in a freelance capacity, thoroughly enjoying the challenges of learning new technology with every new contract. These applications varied between robotics to bulk data capture systems and some of the early support for SMS messaging services.
Tel has been associated with Bloor Research since 2005; his field is application development. However, he keeps up to date with modern trends by continuing to work as a jobbing programmer. Tel says:
"Things have changed so much. Major projects, which would have taken months in the 70's, I can now knock up in a week. There are some things, however, that haven't changed. Programs must still work each and every time without exception and so must the development systems."
