Case Management: the new frontier for work improvement

What the hell is Case Management? Is it just an attempt by certain vendors to reinvigorate their BPM technology profiles? Is it an attempt to make document and content management tools sexier? Is it all about checklists? Is there any difference between tools that people label ‘adaptive’ and the others? And… if the idea is that Case Management platforms are all about managing work which is unstructured and unplanned, what on earth can the value of ‘management’ possibly be in this context?

The promise of Case Management goes something like this:

A Case Management approach to supporting and managing work fits situations where the goals of a given business activity are understood—but where the precise tasks, ordering of tasks, and stakeholders needing to be engaged with the activity are not completely understood at the outset. A Case Management approach particularly fits situations where knowledge—some tacit, and much in the form of documentation as well as structured business data—needs to be captured, acted on, organised and stored, both to aid the successful resolution of a situation and to provide an after-the-fact record of what work was done.

There’s a lot of hype and confusion in this space, though—so it’s difficult to tell whether Case Management tools can really help, or whether this is just another ‘shiny object’ that vendors want you to chase.

On the webinar I’ll be speaking for 30–35 minutes and my aim is to give you an unbiased, independent and expert take on what Case Management is, why it’s important, and where it fits in a portfolio of tools for supporting knowledge work and business processes. We’ll have around 10 minutes for Q&A, and we’ll also have a couple of quick polls as part of the event—I’m really looking forward to some great interactions. This is a great topic to cover, and I’m excited!
