Overcoming the Renewable Energy Skills Gap

New training opportunities for career progression launched to combat growing concerns over the lack
Released: 13th November 2013
Publisher: European Energy Centre

Renewable Electricity generation increased by 58% between the 2nd quarter of 2012 and the same period in 2013. This, added to the fact that Renewable Energy is being seen as a viable alternative to avoid future energy crises, means that there is an ever increasing need for a skilled workforce to meet the needs of this rapidly growing sector. There are a number of courses available as part of expert pathway programmes offered by the European Energy Centre which have been created in order to meet these demands.

The pathways are producing highly trained experts and consultants who are then able to progress their careers in the green sector. The pathway programmes aim to build on the EEC’s experience and commitment to working with its partners to promote best practice in Renewable Energy educational activities, which include the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the inter-governmental IRENA Renewable Energy Learning Partnership (IRELP) and major universities in Europe.

More specifically, courses on Electrics for Renewables (next available 27-28 November ‘13) have been designed by academics and experts to help professionals and students respond effectively to the rapid growth of the industry, through both theoretical and practical expertise. Participants can use this course to begin their progression through the pathway programme, by gaining an internationally recognised Galileo Master Certificate.

The global Professional Membership Programme for Renewable Energy was also launched to respond to the demands for a better skilledworkforce. The Programme has seen requests for membership increase rapidly due to the renewed focus by governments worldwide on the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Agenda. Professionals recognise that they must pursue continuous career development in order to keep pace with the innovations of this fast-growing industry and increasing numbers of students are entering the widening job market of the Renewable Energy sector. The Professional Membership Programme supports its members by providing a structured programme of CPD Activities for Progression and developing a network of like-minded individuals in order to face the growing pace of change, increasing dialogue between professionals in the global Renewable Energy Sector. Membership includes affiliation to an international organisation with almost 40 years’ experience in delivering excellence in Renewable Energy with a strong network of relationships with major global authorities and researchers in the field.
