Cookie Policy and Cookie Preferences

This page is intended as an appendix to our website privacy policy.

To comply with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations we periodically conduct a Cookie Audit of our website.

This Cookie Audit was last updated on 16th May 2013.

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of data given to your browser by a website which may be stored as text files in the cookie directory of your computer. Cookies are not programs and cannot collect information from your computer. They do not damage your computer and are defined as "a piece of text stored on a user's computer by their web browser. A cookie can be used for authentication, storing site preferences, shopping cart contents, the identifier for a server-based session, or anything else that can be accomplished through storing text data" (source: Wikipedia, 2011).

Each website may send cookie data to your browser which may save it to your hard drive if your browser's preferences allow it to do so. To protect your privacy your browser only returns a cookie to the website that sent it originally you the cookie and does not send it to any other website. A website cannot access your cookie directory or information on your computer; instead relevant cookies are included by your browser within each request you make to the website. A website can only obtain cookie data that your browser sends to it.

Types of Cookie

There are two main types of cookie:

Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser and are usually not saved to your computer's hard disk. We use session cookies to:

  • hold some types of non-private information you provide while using an interactive tool on the website
  • identify that you have logged in to the site
  • hold your search criteria while you are carrying out a search of the website
  • collect information on website usage - as described above

Persistent cookies remain on your computer for a specified time and so are saved to your computer's hard disk. We use persistent cookies to:

  • identify that a registered user has returned
  • securely remember your login User ID - if you have asked us to do so
  • understand how you use our site and obtain information on website usage - as described above

Cookies that are set by the site you are visiting are referred to as "first-party cookies". Other cookies set by suppliers and external service providers are known as "third-party cookies".

How Do I Disable Cookies?

It is usually possible to stop your browser accepting cookies, or to stop it accepting cookies from a particular website. For example, we cannot tell if you are signed in without using cookies, so you would not be able to post comments.

All modern browsers allow you to change your cookie settings. These settings will typically be found in the 'options' or 'preferences' menu of your browser. In order to understand these setttings, the following links may be helpful, otherwise you should use the 'Help' option in your browser for more details.

If you are primarily concerned about third party cookies generated by advertisers, you can turn these off by going to the Your Online Choices site. You can also visit the trade body representing these advertising platforms for more information: Network Advertising Initative (who offer a useful opt-out tool)
