Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reduce risk of calculation errors with Episys
Released: 11th December 2013
Publisher: Episys

St. Richard’s Hospital and Worthing Hospital, part of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, have gone a step further to increasing safety at its Aseptic Manufacturing unit, with the addition of Formula, part of the Worksheet module from Episys, the global information technology solutions and services company, to improve the security and audit trail on the labelling of all drugs.

St. Richard’s Hospital and Worthing Hospital are already using the Ultimate labelling system from Episys. The Episys Formula module, part of the worksheet software, calculates the drug dose for each patient removing the possibility of human error, something which could potentially have devastating effects if miscalculated.

Bernice Smart, Technician Team Leader, Aseptics Services at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said, “We already have the worksheet and labelling system in place and we are always looking to improve safety when it comes to the dispensing of patient medicines. Before we manually worked out the calculations of each drug dispensed, now with the addition of Formulas we rely on the computer to perform the automated calculations which we then check. It’s another step in the right direction in reducing the risk of any errors occurring when we dispense drugs.”

Bernice Smart continued, “The measurement of any medicine dispensed is a crucial part of our process, to make sure the dose is accurate. We are always looking at ways to decrease risk and the Episys module helped us achieve this.

Derek Buchanan, CEO of Episys, said, “Working closely with pharmacy departments, our systems are specifically designed to enable staff to deliver first class service to patients. Reducing the risk of error is vital and we are delighted that our system is able to assist in such a way.”
