SAND Searchable Archive
from SAND Technology
By: Bloor Research, Hurwitz & Associates
Published: June 2005

SAND Searchable Archive basically does three things:

  1. It allows you to store data from your data warehouse, operational data store,
or other database in a highly compressed form, typically taking up around
1/10th the space that would otherwise be required.
  2. It allows you to continue to query (but with simple queries only) that data
while it is still in the archive and without de-compressing it.
  3. It allows you to rapidly reconstitute the compressed data (or a subset thereof)
back into the data warehouse (or into a new data mart) at any time, should
you need to perform more complex queries on that data.

Of course, it is more complicated than this and there are more facilities but this is
the kernel of what SAND Searchable Archive does. In effect, it allows you to turn
a 10Tb data warehouse into a 1Tb warehouse with a 1Tb archive (or better). The
cost implications of such an approach should be obvious.

In this report we will describe how SAND Searchable Archive does this, as well as
the additional features and functions that are available. In practice, the product
reuses technology that has been employed by SAND in its SAND Analytic Server
product for a number of years and this paper discusses the data management
principles that underlie both of these products as well as the technological features
specific to SAND Searchable Archive.
